Job Description

Staff/Sr/MTS, Tanzu Kubernetes Grid(TKG) Engineering
The Elevator Pitch: Why would you enjoy this new opportunity
Enterprises are running mission critical software in more places than ever before -- in their datacenter, hybrid cloud, public cloud, and at the edge. In order to catalyze Enterprise transformation through software, VMware envisions a world where Kubernetes is as available as a utility - like electricity - customers need to deploy a consistent Kubernetes grid across all their operational environments. Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (TKG) provides Enterprise organizations with a consistent, upstream compatible, Kubernetes substrate across SDDC, Public Cloud, and Edge environments that is ready for end-user workloads and ecosystem integrations. TKG builds on trusted open source and community projects and delivers an engineered and supported Kubernetes platform for end users and partners.
What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for
FIPS certification requires critical security features to be part of a product's encryption module to be sold to US public sectors and enterprises. Given that the native go crypto libraries are not FIPS validated, it requires additional efforts to build FIPS certified Kubernetes and TKG releases and most importantly, test them. You will be working on this ground-breaking effort as part of the TKG FIPS team.
As a member of this team, you will focus on building the infrastructure to enable FIPS validation for Kubernetes and TKG releases. Your work would be broad-reaching across the company and the open source ecosystem and will involve enhancing the entire toolset chain, building a robust test automation framework and leveraging upstream Kubernetes test tools.
Since this role involves owning the overall quality of the TKG FIPS releases, understanding of FIPS and crypto libraries would be a plus, but not required. We are looking for a passionate and focused golang engineer who can work with multiple teams and has the knowledge of release and testing strategies, scripting languages, automation frameworks, continuous integration systems and especially upstream Kubernetes testing frameworks (SIG testing areas). You will have the ability to work on multiple areas of the product and contribute in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months, you will work toward completing
. Lead the TKG FIPS team to deliver FIPS certified TKG releases and ensure seamless user experience for customers by collaborating with engineers and product managers across different component teams.
. Design and build a robust test automation framework for FIPS validation by leveraging the upstream Kubernetes and existing TKG test frameworks and CI/CD systems.
. Recommend best practices and tools to improve automation standards and processes.
What type of work will you be doing What assignments or requirements will you be performing on a regular basis
On a regular basis,
. You'll spend a decent amount of your time understanding how the various components of our product fit together with particular attention to the test and release automation for TKG.
. You'll design and write code to develop tools and pipelines for automating the testing and release of the product.
. You'll work on identifying test scenarios to be covered for ensuring complete product quality for FIPS certification of TKG.
. Track new product features and correspondingly design and implement automation, recommend new tools and standards, triage and review.
. Track the activities and progress across projects, assess the impact across dependencies and timelines and provide recommendations and feedback.
. Participate in reviews, discussions in the slack, mailing lists and meetings.
. Collaborate in the internal architecture planning and design meetings.
. Mentor, provide direction and guidance to junior engineers and new hires in the team.
. Work in a distributed team across multiple geographical locations.
. Contribute to upstream Kubernetes such as SIG testing areas.
