The Scrum master is known as the guardian of the Scrum Team, and they serve as the Scrum Framework authority for the teams. In this role, they continuously evangelize and educate teams on its execution by embracing the Scrum Values, Principals, and practices.
As a facilitator, you help the team resolve issues and make improvements to its use of scrum. You, as the Scrum Master, also help protect the team from outside distractions and help the team to be more efficient and effective in their delivery of value sprint after sprint.
It’s important to remember that the Scrum Master is not a Project Manager. Specifically:

  • The Scrum Master does not exert control over the team like a project manager. The team owns 100% of how a product is built.
  • The Scrum Master does not generate status reports, Gantt charts, or phase reviews like Project Managers.
  • The Scrum Master does not have any deliverables like a Project Manager. This is intentional in order to ensure their effort is wholly focused on the betterment of the team and its execution of scrum.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Be a servant leader. You receive as much satisfaction from facilitating others’ success as your own.
  • Removes impediments preventing the team from accomplishing its sprint goals and tasks.
  • Able to communicate well with both your teams and other delivery teams as well as ensure the team and various stakeholders always have visibility into work in progress and value that has been delivered.
  • Enthusiasm and high-energy when needed but calm and neutral in facilitating conflict resolution.
  • Facilitates Scrum ceremonies; including daily scrums, refinement sessions, sprint planning, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Builds a trusting and safe environment where problems can be raised without fear of blame, retribution, or judgment.
  • Fosters an environment where creativity and empowerment can flourish.
  • Facilitates discussions, decision making, and conflict resolution.
  • Supports the team in drafting working agreements including the definition of ready and definition of done.
  • Guides the team to higher levels of maturity, at a pace that is sustainable and comfortable for the team.
  • Works with Product Owners and other stakeholders to manage cross-team, department dependencies.
  • Works with Product Owners to ensure the appropriate development and delivery of the prioritized backlog.
  • Work directly with individuals (Dev Team Members, Product Owners, and Leaders) to identify strengths and weaknesses of existing approaches, tools and dynamics
  • Ensure cross-team collaboration to avoid dependencies and ensure transparency

Preferred Skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, computer science, or engineering.
  • Deliver presentations to large or small groups both at scrum team and leadership levels
  • Scrum Master certification (CSM)
  • 4+ years experience as a Scrum Master in a professional environment supporting Scrum Teams and diligently applying Scrum principles, practices, and theory.
  • Ability to apply a wide variety of patterns and techniques to enable the team to achieve success.
  • Conflict resolution: able to identify constructive conflict from destructive conflict; facilitate discussion of issues, different approaches, and alternatives; and effectively resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Facilitate: able to guide and focus teams on value-add principles and collaboration.
  • A thorough understanding and appreciation for Agile values and principles.
  • Assertive: able to champion Agile and Scrum concepts and principles and be a voice of reason and authority.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with widely successful Agile techniques: User Stories, Test Driven Development, Continuous Integration, Continuous Testing, Pairing, Automated Testing, Agile Games.
  • Strong grasp of software development and technology.
