Job Description:
1) Job Purpose:
  • To take responsibility for upkeep of refractory materials at Birla Copper Dahej to increase productivity and plant availability:
    1. High temperature resistant furnaces across all operations
    2. Anti-corrosion lining of refineries, acids plants and fertilizer plants
  • To plan, procure and install refractory materials during installation and commissioning of new projects at Birla Copper, Dahej
  • To ensure compliances with respect to statutes, health, safety, environment norms, quality certification parameters with respect to refractory material and the processes they support
  • To continuously upgrade skills of the team and embed a culture of quality, safety and sustainability.

Key Result Areas/Accountabilities
Supporting Actions
Planning
  • Preparing the annual R&M budget based on previous consumption patterns and planned future requirements with regard to repair & maintenance expenses, operating supply of consumables etc. w.r.t refractories and anti-corrosion lining at Smelter 1, 3 SAP 1, 3 Refinery 1, 2,3, CCR 1, 2, 3, PMR Plant, CPP 1,2,3 ALF3, DAP, WTP and ETP.
  • Deciding MOC (Material of construction) for equipment and infrastructure keeping in mind the corrosive nature of the acids being used and the heat in the environment as well as the overall hot and humid environment of the coastal area
  • Preparing preventive and predictive maintenance plan on the inputs of the Technical Services Department and planning annual shutdown in coordination and relevant operating departments.

Operational Excellence
  • Procuring of quality material in collaboration with the commercial team through stringent inspection with respect to quality
  • Installing refractories and anti-corrosion lining within required timelines without compromising quality and HSE norms
  • Ensuring all preventive maintenance activities is conducted as per schedule and budget to maximize plant availability.

Budgetary Controls
  • Monitoring consumption and inventory levels to operate within budget and eliminate wastage
  • Developing strategy and action plan for substitution of critical and costly spares and adaptation of costly technology and equipment

Compliances
  • Supporting operations to eliminate seepage of corrosive acids through refinery floor by ensuring anti-corrosion linings are maintained at all times
  • Supporting operations teams in compliances related to statutes, Integrated Management System and EHS norms
  • Embedding safety culture through use of PPEs and safe work processes and minimizing safety incidents and eliminating accidents.

Customer centricity
  • Achieving highest standards of Quality Cost Delivery Innovation and Productivity (QCDIP) parameters of the Internal Customer Satisfaction Survey
  • Ensuring availability of equipment within minimum turnaround time in case of breakdown of refractories
  • Providing critical inputs to the commercial team with respect to vendor evaluation and selection

Sustainability and Systems Improvement
  • Ensuring good housekeeping practices in areas of operation
  • Monitoring functioning of existing equipment in collaboration with Technical Services to assess left out safe life and conducting predictive maintenance with minimum downtime
  • Reviewing sufficiency and technical viability of refractories and their optimum utilization in light of present and in the future business and sustainability requirements
  • Steering improvement activities such as kaizen, Quality Circes etc.
  • Partnering in digitization initiatives
  • Ensuring good housekeeping practices
  • Partnering in creation and maintenance of green belt

People development and engagement
  • Monitoring manpower performance and identifying development action need.
  • Monitoring training of team members to enhance technical competencies, improve behavioral effectiveness and embed a culture of safety
  • Improving employee engagement scores
  • Embedding 5S work culture
