Job Description
We have been retained by our client, a well-established, professionally managed General Insurance Company to identify a Vice President -National Underwriter (Property) to be based at Mumbai. 

Job Purpose 

Manage, develop and implement underwriting and product strategies for profitability and growth in the Property Lines of business through the development of pricing models, underwriting guidelines and authorities, product development, budgeting and compliance and legal obligations. 

Work closely with Property sales team to provide training and support, to ensure all business objectives are aligned to the Company’s Corporate Plan to provide profitable growth. 

Assume responsibility for all aspects of Property underwriting including risk acceptance, pricing strategies, policy wordings and agreed endorsements. 

Assist the Head of Underwriting and Reinsurance in any other matters as directed.

Key Responsibilities 
• Assist the Head of Underwriting and Reinsurance with the development and implementation of the overall business strategy for Property Insurance in India. 

• Support growth in sales to facilitate delivery of overall business performance targets, key performance indicators and business mix. 

• Identify, evaluate and develop recommendations supported by business cases for the development of new distribution channels/partners. 

• Seek opportunities for innovation in the design and development of products and procedures. 

• Develop and implement the Company’s Insurance underwriting strategy for Property Insurance products that will deliver target earnings and revenues. 

• Evaluation of portfolio performance: financial, portfolio metrics, audit performance, claims performance 

• Support the Head of Underwriting and Reinsurance as necessary in ensuring that appropriate reinsurance programmes are placed at optimum terms in line with Company’s strategy 

• Provide technical rating; 

• Develop and maintain underwriting manuals and pricing models; 

• Monitor the development of the Property Insurance markets across India and make recommendations as to how to capitalize on emerging and/or immediate business opportunities; 

• Support and implement all appropriate control procedures for India including but not limited to peer reviews, transactional reviews, portfolio reviews, internal audits; 

• Lead the Property Underwriting team in a way that develops a high-performance culture and an engaged workforce and lead the dissemination and adoption of Property Insurance best practice throughout the company. 

• Develop, implement and facilitate knowledge transfer in respect of Property Insurance throughout the company pan India, leading training and development to support local delivery of business performance targets and key performance indicators 

• Ensure that all company people policies and processes are followed; 

• Represent the company amongst Property insurance peers in the market; 

• Contribute to the development of relationships with key external and internal stakeholders; 

• Drive improvements in customer/broker values and perception by raising service levels 

Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications 

• Broad span of knowledge of Property Insurance and reinsurance, its segments, dynamics and strategies 

• Previous experience at management level 

• Previous experience in leading a Property Insurance team / portfolio 

• Strong administration, time management and organisational skills 

• Superior communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal. 

• Disciplined ability to work under pressure and meet personal deadlines. 

• Ability to liaise with internal management, staff and clients at all levels. 

• Strong and effective decision-making ability 

• Knowledge and experience of the market, trends and opportunities 

• Ability to manage and resolve conflict 

• Proven ability to develop and execute business strategy 

• Proven track record of building effective business to business partnerships 

• Strong skills in negotiating with all levels of intermediaries and direct customers 

• Commercially aware, with strong forward-looking strategic outlook 

• Proven track record of training and up-skilling Property Insurance personnel 

• Proficient computer skills. 

• CAs/ MBAs from reputed business schools. 

• Insurance qualifications desirable. 

• Ideally 10 to 15 years in general insurance with minimum 3/5 years’ experience in Property underwriting 

• Experience in leading a high performing and disparate team. 

• Knowledge of business operations, objectives and strategies as well as business process and information flow 

• Understanding of best business practices and data management and reporting.

• A sound knowledge of insurance product features, pricing and underwriting guidelines 

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to work in collaborative environment. 

• Ability to effectively manage time and resources to achieve short- and long-term goals, balancing detail-orientation with speed of execution while planning and prioritizing. 

• Experienced in negotiation, facilitation, problem solving and decision making at a senior level. 

• A sound understanding of the Indian insurance regulatory environment

Candidates Profile:

Candidates should be CAs/ MBAs from reputed business schools, with 10 to 15 years relevant experience in the General Insurance with minimum 3/5 years’ experience in Property underwriting.
